Quick Tip for the Week

With the explosive growth of smartphones and other mobile devices giving people access to the Internet in a whole new way, it’s becoming more and more important to take these users into account when designing every aspect of your website. There are obvious design issues with things like the website itself and page layouts, but matters as simple as page titles often get overlooked, to the detriment of anyone seeking higher pageviews and everything that comes with along with it.

A significant majority of mobile users make use of search engines, so it’s important to accommodate them and to make your page titles as suited for the mobile user as possible. Remember that if this is the first time they’ve seen your brand it is more than just a page title, but a first impression and possibly the only one. It can very easily influence whether someone clicks your link or a competitor’s so it’s important to get it as right as you can.

The first thing to try to do is to keep your titles to 45 characters or fewer. This is a much tighter limit than the desktop’s 65 but the smaller screens of smartphones make shorter titles the ideal.

In a similar vein put your keywords or selling points at the beginning of the title if possible. This will help searchers see that your site is offering what they want, both because it’s more likely to appear higher in their results and because they can see first-hand that it speaks about whatever they’re interested in.

You still need to keep Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in mindof course, but the lower character limit can make it more difficult to work it in so make sure you’re not writing awkward titles. Obviously avoid keyword stuffing or any poor practices like that as well.

Remember to use Google Analytics or a similar analytical program to see whether people are finding your site with different searches on mobile devices versus desktop computers and to adjust your policies accordingly.

Keep these quick tips in mind when you’re writing up your page titles and you should find them bringing in more interested searchers. Let us know about anything in particular which has worked for you, as well.
